On Friday, Artist Relief, a collaboration between various arts organizations founded to bring aid to arts workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, announced its first field partner: the Sundance Institute. These field partners will each provide discipline-specific focuses for the grants the fund doles out, and more will be announced in the coming weeks. The institute is best-known for the Sundance Film Festival, but since its founding in 1981, it has also run countless workshops and development programs for writers, directors, producers and more working within cinema. As a field partner with Artist Relief, the institute will guide its efforts to help film artists.
Deana Haggag, president and CEO of United States Artists, an Artist Relief member organization, said in a statement: “We’re thrilled to welcome [Sundance Institute] to Artist Relief as we deepen our work to support artists in film, media, and theatre.”
On the Sundance Institute’s end, this partnership is part of its wider efforts to help people affected by the widespread work shutdowns under COVID-19. The Institute’s “COVID-19 Respond and Reimagine Plan” pledges $1 million to support artists in need within the film community, split between those already enrolled in its various programs and the wider industry. (Said programs have transitioned from taking place via in-person events and classes to being hosted on the online platform Sundance Co//ab.)
