Description
18 мая 1927 года Репин писал Чуковскому: «…больше полугода я работаю над картиной «Гопак», посвящённой памяти Модеста Петровича Мусоргского…». Был взят большой холст, и на нём стала компоноваться картина «Гопак – пляска запорожцев». Удаль, веселье. Холст как будто не может вместить всех фигур… Запорожцы прыгают через костёр, пляшут. «Даже столетний дид вприсядку пошёл», - пишет Репин друзьям о картине, пересказывая её сюжет. Снова началась переписка со знатоком Запорожской сечи учёным Яворницким. Репин просит прислать ему фотографии, так как ехать в Запорожье ему тяжело, он стар. Репину ещё много работы с «Гопаком» - в 1928 году он пишет Чуковскому, что, вероятно, ещё года на два. Работа над «Гопаком» шла в верхней не отапливаемой мастерской, куда Репин с трудом поднимался, только летом, вплоть до самой смерти от простуды 29 сентября 1930 года.(Кириллина Е. Репин в «Пенатах».
